Musical & Liturgical Notes This First Sunday of Advent marks the beginning of a new liturgical year, Year A of the three-year Lectionary Cycle. Across this year, most of the Gospel lessons are drawn from the Gospel of Matthew. (For those using the two-year cycle of daily readings for Morning and Evening Prayer provided in THE BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER, beginning at p. 934, today marks the opening of Year One.) The service music for Advent changes to reflect the somewhat more contemplative tone of these weeks leading to Christmas. The plainsong Kyrie and Agnus Dei come from a group of medieval chants associated particularly with feasts honoring the Virgin Mary; the relatively simple Sanctus comes from another plainsong Mass. We also shift to plainsong for the Gradual Psalms during this season, and to Eucharistic Prayer B. The great English composer C. Hubert H. Parry (1848-1918) straddled the end of the Victorian era and the beginning of the twentieth century. He was a founding member of the faculty of the new Royal College of Music in 1883, and spent many more than twenty years as its Director. He composed his setting of verses from Psalm 122, today’s appointed Psalm, for the coronation of King Edward VII in 1902, revising it for George V in 1911; it has been sung at every British coronation since then, as well as at countless other “state occasions” around the world.
