Coast Guard rescues eight fishermen from sinking boat

The Coast Guard rescued eight fishermen from a sinking fishing boat 30 miles south of Point Loma, Calif., at 12:04 p.m., Aug. 20, 2011. Coast Guard Sector San Diego initially received a distress call from the owner of the 45-foot fishing boat Osprey that black smoke was coming from the engine and the boat was taking on water. A Coast Guard rescue helicopter arrived on scene shortly after the initial call and lowered a dewatering pump to the crew; however the pump was unable to keep up with the water. The helicopter crew hoisted all eight crewmembers after the Osprey began to emit black smoke from its engine compartment.
