Saudi officials comment on Hajj security and concerns over ebola

(2 Oct 2014) Saudi officials on Thursday commented on security and health concerns as an estimated two million Muslims streamed into a sprawling tent city near Mecca for the start of the annual Islamic Hajj pilgrimage. Interior Ministry Spokesman Major General Mansour Al-Turki said that the kingdom was facing continuous threats from extremists, but was prepared to ensure a safe hajj. Meanwhile, Health Ministry spokesman Khaled Marghalani sought to assure the public that Saudi Arabia was safe and free of health scares after earlier banning people from Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea - the countries hardest hit in the Ebola epidemic - from getting visas. The decision has affected a total of 7,400 pilgrims from the three countries.
