As the ECOWAS deadline fast approaches on Sunday, Paul Melly, a journalist and consulting fellow of the Africa programme at Chatham House in London, tells FRANCE 24 it is possible that ECOWAS will first wait to see how much the sanctions they have already imposed on Niger affect it before imposing military action. Opinion is divided in Niger, as protests both in support of elected President Mohamed Bazoum and the coup leaders have sprung up across the country.
