Mehfil-e-Nazm | 'Mat Qatl Karo Aawazon Ko' by Ahmad Faraz

In this poem, Faraz depicts what the future of a violent, intolerant society looks like. He accuses violent forces of striking at people’s hearts with the spears of their faith/religion, of brandishing daggers at them and of being blood-thirsty. Those protesting such intolerance are in stark contrast to their oppressors: they bring solidarity, they write songs, they protect flowers and preserve their fragrance. They preach the message of love. What will you find in this city when it is reduced to ruins, when melody and music is severed by swords, when the death knell of voices is sounded, and when poetry will leave the city, Faraz asks.
