Cabinet minister Douglas Alexander has said the vetting process that led to the appointment of Lord Mandelson as ambassador to the US was “flawed”, but the prime minister did not “knowingly” mislead the public. Speaking to the Today programme about ousted civil servant Sir Olly Robbins, who was sacked last week, the Scotland Secretary said Sir Olly was a “distinguished public servant” but that it was possible for “good people to make bad judgements”. Earlier in the programme, former permanent under-secretary for the Foreign Office Lord McDonald said Sir Olly had been “thrown under the bus”.
