If you want to explain the universe and what's happening within it, you have two tools at your disposal, in the broadest sense. If you want to explain what's happening in the quantum universe, the interactions between elementary particles, electromagnetism, and nuclear forces, you'll turn to "quantum field theory." If you're saying "I work with larger objects," then you'll turn to "general relativity." These two theories have been subjected to countless tests and have successfully passed them all, and they're the closest to our "theory of everything." But here's the problem. The theory of everything can't be two separate theories... It shouldn't be. And it won't be... Why shouldn't it be? You might ask. I can give you two very valid reasons. Black holes and the big bang... These two, which we've never been able to reconcile, combine quantum field theory and general relativity. But how? Do things get messy when these two come together, or does the theory of everything reveal itself only when things get messy? Only one theory can answer this question.
