Bertie Ahern: IRA's McGuinnes 'was committed to peace' Martin McGuinness, former deputy first minister of Northern Ireland and IRA commander, has died at the age of 66. Speaking to Al Jazeera from Dublin, Bertie Ahern, Ireland's former Prime Minister who played a leading role in the Irish peace process, said McGuinness played a vital role in the Northern Ireland peace process. "McGuiness was clear that the troubles that were known had to come to an end and he acknowledge that people from both side have suffered and that he was committed to convince people towards peace," he said.
