This is a basic long jump drill that allows an athlete to work on his landing technique by jumping into a high jump mat. The advantage of jumping into a mat is that it minimizes impact (allowing for more reps to be performed) and that a sand pit is not necessary. There are two boxes in this video -- the first is about 1 foot high and the second is about 1 1/2 - 2 feet high. This can be a very dangerous drill due to the high speed the athlete brings! Be sure boxes are stable and will not slip or tip over. For safety, this drill can also be done with a springboard for take-off, but this can sometimes lead to an athlete learning to 'block' too much at take-off. For this reason I prefer boxes that are not slanted.
