On August 10, 2025, Sunland Park Police Officers were dispatched to a motor vehicle accident. A bystander reported that a Pontiac ran a stop sign and crashed into the driver of a Chevy Colorado pickup truck. The 19-year-old driver of the Pontiac and her passenger both fled the scene on foot. Sgt. Duran and Officer Valenzuela located both of them a few blocks away. Both were detained in handcuffs and transported back to the scene of the accident. The driver admitted to consuming alcohol, so she was asked to perform standardized field sobriety tests. She refused the tests and was subsequently arrested for Driving While Under the Influence of Liquor. After being read the New Mexico Implied Consent Act, she also refused to provide breath samples. Her charges and the outcome of her case are listed at the end of the video.
