A Mary and Henry character study. The Mary/Henry father-daughter relationship is personally one of the most interesting in the show. You've got Mary who clearly loves her father but then I can't help but feel that she can't let go of what he did to her mother (nor would I expect her to) and the way in which he continuously screws up her life i.e. banning her from seeing her mother, sending Philip away etc. But then you've got Henry who clearly cares for his daughter...ok he made her a bastard but Anne Boleyn kept pushing for Mary's death and Henry didn't give in. Then there's the likelihood (in show anyway) that he couldn't really show Mary any affection in case Anne retaliated etc. I think Mary just caught up in Henry's struggle for a son and suffered the most for it.
