Meet the (Ha)bros: Habronattus hirsutus

To learn more about why we research these animals, please go to http://experiment.com/projects/why-ar... ** Hirsutus is bigger than pyrrithrix and virgulatus. The males of this particular population are black and gold, and very hairy. They also have light green stripes on the base of their front legs. Hirsutus is arboreal and can be found in brushes and shrubs, unlike the ground-dwelling species we’ve described before. Hirsutus’ courtship dance can only be described as bizarre - males lean to the side and twitch with their raised front legs. We haven’t had a chance to formally describe this yet, some of the jerky movement could function in crypsis, e.g. mimicking random movement of plant material in the wind.
