Candlelit vigil held a month after Flight MH370 disappeared

(7 Apr 2014) A candle lit vigil was held in Kuala Lumpur on Monday, marking the first month since Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 went missing. Dozens of people gathered in Merdeka Square for the vigil where they lit candles and sat together praying. Some of the candles were laid out to spell "MH 370" while other formed the outline of a plane. "We pray for the families to have strength, to have strength and courage, to be able to accept whatever eventuality there maybe," said Peter Chong who was attending the vigil. Malaysian authorities said on Monday they were "cautiously hopeful," following reports from Australia that underwater sounds, detected by a ship searching the southern Indian Ocean for the missing Malaysia Airlines jet, were consistent with the pings from aircraft black boxes. The plane disappeared on 8 March while en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 people on board.
