Research shows that children do best in kinship care and that family connections are crucial to healthy child development and a sense of belonging. Kinship care also helps to preserve children’s cultural identity and relationship to their community. The NYS KinCare Coalition is working to create a Kin-First Culture in New York State. Ryan Johnson, MSW, chair of the NYS KinCare Coalition, presented a 30-minute webinar outlining how this group of kinship caregivers, service providers, and other stakeholders is working to advance the cause of kinship care in New York. They educate and advocate on kinship issues ranging from access to available benefits, custodial and family court issues, and funding for kinship support services throughout the state. Interested in adding your voice? The Coalition meets regularly to discuss issues and propose solutions via legislative action and community education.
