XVI: 1) by Joseph Haydn (1732 – 1809) Note from ABRSM At the time when Haydn composed this Menuet and Trio, he would have been writing not for the pianoforte of today, but for the much more delicate-sounding fortepiano, with leather hammers and thin harpsichord-like strings in place of the metal frames and wooden hammers of the modern instrument. This elegant C major Menuet, with its cheerful triplet figures and elegant ornamentation, is sunny and open. When the C minor Trio starts, with its very different and more unsettled feel, it's like a cloud passing over, with some darker tones to find in the instrument before the sun returns on the da Capo. While the articulation is non-legato, it should still maintain a clear and flowing melodic line, embodying an elegant character. Balance between the hands is essential—the right hand should be slightly detached throughout, while the left hand provides a supportive, well-shaped accompaniment. In contrast, the Trio (bars 21–43) allows for a more connected touch, with longer tones enhancing its lyrical quality. The shift from C minor (bars 21–28) to E-flat major (bars 29–35) brings a noticeable change in color and expression, which should be carefully highlighted.
