Smoke rose from strikes on the Azovstal steel and ironworks plant in Mariupol, Ukraine, video shared by advisers to Mayor of Mariupol Petro Andriushchenko on May 9 shows. Aerial video shows several strikes on rail lines leading into the Azovstal plant, as well as smoke rising from buildings in the area. The Soviet-era plant was used as a shelter for Mariupol residents as Russian forces conducted strikes on the area. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said dozens of civilians were evacuated last week from the plant to Zaporizhzhia. An adviser to the mayor of Mariupol said on May 9 that Russia had resumed attacks on the Azovstal steel plant after a UN convoy had left the Donetsk region.
