For today’s Vault Series video, here’s the Allegro - the 3rd movement from Joaquin Rodrigo’s Sonata Giocosa (playful sonata). The Sonata Giocosa (playful sonata) is a more light hearted take on the typical classical era sonata form. Rodrigo often uses flamenco elements in his music like rapid, fiery scales passages and rasqueado strums. The 3rd movement takes shape as a zapateado. But it also incorporates the Bulerías rhythm. (Think the 3 against 2 rhythm in the song “America” from West Side Story)
