It's the forty-seventh anniversary, and we hope to just remind ourselves that on this day forty-seven years ago, several thousand people, amounting to eighty-seven thousand people according to Chinese records, gave up their lives .They died as a result of this uprising that took place all over Tibet, and for us, Tibetans living in New York, this is a very, very important moment because we feel extremely proud that many of our ancestors, many of our forefathers and parents, gave up their lives on this day." 4. Mid shot protestors across from UN building STORYLINE Hundreds of pro-Tibet demonstrators gathered in Manhattan and then marched to the United Nations in New York City today (Friday) to protest what they called China's continued occupation of their country. They called on the UN to help their cause of "getting China out of Tibet." The day marks the 47th anniversary of Tibet's National Uprising Day when, in 1959, thousands of Tibetans rose up against what they called the Chinese occupation of Tibet. The uprising was crushed by the Chinese, and the Dalai Lama and thousands of his followers fled Tibet to seek refuge in India. There, they established a government in exile based out of the northern town of Dharmsala. Every year since, exiled Tibetans have commemorated March 10 as Tibetan National Uprising Day. China has claimed Tibet as part of its territory for centuries. In 1950 its forces occupied the region, which led to the uprising nine years later. keyword-protests Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork Twitter: / ap_archive Facebook: / aparchives Instagram: / apnews You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/you...
