The latest escalation between Russia and Ukraine over the Sea of Azov exemplifies the precarious security situation in Eastern Europe. This event will look at the current crisis and the historical background from a Baltic point of view. The Baltic states were annexed by the Soviet Union in 1940 and forced to become Soviet Republics in 1944. They ascended the European Union (EU) and the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) in 2004. Latvia and Estonia still have a significant Russian minority population and are therefore extremely concerned about the increasing hostility between Moscow and Europe.
