Before attaining enlightenment, he took 12 mighty vows to save all beings from suffering. He vowed to: Cure every disease. Remove every fear. Feed the hungry. Free all beings from the darkness of ignorance. One ancient tale tells of a king whose beloved queen was gravely ill. No physician in the kingdom could heal her. In desperation, the king prayed for 7 nights to the Medicine Buddha, reciting his mantra with faith. On the seventh night, the Buddha appeared in his dream, holding a bowl of healing nectar. He told the king, "Mix pure water with compassion in your heart, and let her drink it after you chant my mantra 108 times." The king followed these instructions. By the next sunrise, the queen’s illness had vanished, and her body radiated health. From then on, the king spread the mantra throughout his land, and peace and healing flourished. Even today, Tibetan monks, Himalayan healers, and Buddhist devotees believe that chanting the Medicine Buddha Mantra with a pure heart can: Heal the sick. Protect travelers. Bring comfort to the dying. Grant spiritual liberation.
