Surgery may be part of some mesothelioma patients' treatment plans. These patients likely wonder and worry what surgery is like and what they can expect afterward. Heather Von St. James explains her experience recovering from an extrapleural pneumonectomy (EPP), a surgery that removes one lung, the lining around it and other impacted tissues. Diagnosed at 36, Heather was just starting a family when she found out she had pleural mesothelioma. The typical prognosis for mesothelioma tends to be between 15 and 31 months, and Heather's doctors gave her only 15 months to live. She has outlived that prognosis by well over a decade.
