Deluge Disaster: River Sutlej Overflows, Villages Submerged!

On Tuesday, India released a staggering amount of water, exceeding 70,000 cusecs, into the River Sutlej in Pakistan from the Harike headworks. This sudden water release led to a relentless rise in the water level, prompting the prompt action of the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA). The PDMA swiftly issued a high alert to the Punjab authorities, emphasizing the need for immediate precautions in response to the influx of water. Consequently, the River Sutlej breached its banks, resulting in severe flooding in nearby villages on both sides of the river. One of the worst affected areas was the village of Sehjra near Kasur, which became submerged in the floodwaters. Despite the PDMA's high alert, rescue teams faced challenges reaching the area, forcing the residents to evacuate to safer locations without external assistance. Anticipating the potential threat of floods, the PDMA had already instructed the Deputy Commissioners of Kasur, Okara, Vehari, and Pakpattan to make adequate arrangements in advance. As a precautionary measure, the PDMA has declared a high alert for the entire province of Punjab. The situation remains critical as the water level continues to rise unabated, presenting a significant challenge for the authorities and residents in the affected regions.
