Former Coach Sentenced For Child Sex Charges

A former children's community league basketball coach will spend at least 30 years behind bars for child sex crimes. Christopher Burk was indicted on 56 charges last year in Macon County. They included sexual exploitation of a minor, child abuse, and indecent liberties. Burk pleaded guilty to having sex with three girls under the age of 10 and taking pictures and videos. He was sentenced to between 33 and 50 years. Macon County's sheriff says the victims are the heroes in this case. "It took a lot of courage for these little girls to give the information and to give the details that they did that a lot of us adults wouldn't have done," said Sheriff Robbie Holland. Holland says he'd be more satisfied if Burk spent the rest of his life in prison, but he says consideration had to be given to the three young girls involved. "But in the best interest of the children, the District Attorney's Office, as well as us, felt that it was. The family really wanted the children not to have to testify," said Holland. Macon County residents like Martha Holbrook are glad to see a long prison sentence. "He should never touch a child. He totally should be put away," said Holbrook. Burk will serve his sentence at a state Department of Corrections facility.
