At the 2012 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, driver Jeremy Foley and co-driver Yuri Kouznetsov were involved in a horrifying crash when their Mitsubishi Evolution 8 lost control at mile 16, a section known as Devil’s Playground. The car flew off the mountain, rolling more than a dozen times as it plummeted hundreds of feet down a steep slope. Incredibly, both men escaped without injury. Foley later described it as “an incredibly violent accident,” crediting their survival to the car’s reinforced roll cage and Recaro racing seats, which absorbed much of the impact. Footage of the crash quickly went viral, shocking audiences worldwide and giving the corner lasting infamy—eventually earning it an informal nickname after the accident.
