Amid rising tensions, India and Canada have reportedly “paused” their negotiations on a bilateral free trade agreement. This comes days after PM Modi expressed concern over “anti-India activities of extremist elements” in Canada at his meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on the sidelines of the G20 Summit. Canada's trade commission announced on its website that the trade mission to India had been postponed. Ties between the two countries have been strained over the activities of pro-Khalistan groups in Canada. In New Delhi last week at the G20 summit, the chill in the relationship was apparent.
