Global Initiative against Transnational Organised Crime explained

The issue of Illegal mines operating in the country came under the spotlight this week. This follows the brutal gang rape of 8 women in Krugersdorp last week. It is alleged that they were attacked by illegal miners who operate in the area. The attack highlighted the high level of crime in the area and sparked violent protests by residents. A large-scale police operation this week led to the arrest of dozens of illegal miners on the West Rand. Minister of Minerals and Energy, Gwede Mantashe, now suggests the establishment of a special police task force to deal with the situation there. Are we merely scratching at the surface of a much bigger, more sophisticated network of criminals taking advantage of the country’s more than 6000 abandoned and derelict mines?
