On the 2nd of August 1990, Iraq, governed by Saddam Hussein, invaded the tiny, oil rich emirate of Kuwait. Within two days he had control of the entire country. The US would never allow such a hostile nation to control the area that held two thirds of the world’s oil resources. The US was able to put together a complex international force of over 750,000 troops, led by US Army General Norman Schwarzkopf Jr. In the lengthy air campaign, the allies dropped more conventional explosives on Iraq and Kuwait in the first two weeks, than they had throughout the whole 310-week Second World War. This was followed by a ground offensive of over 100 hours, in which the US armored division's 350 MI Abrahams tanks required 600,000 gallons of fuel, almost twice as much as the US 3rd Army used during its 1944–1945 advance into Germany from France. This is the story of Operation Desert Storm.
