Collecting Morel Mushrooms in the Beautiful Mountains of Western Canada!

(2025 Morel Season Episode 4) Our Online Shop https://northernwildharvest.myshopify... In this episode we enjoy our final kootenay mountain harvest before we get ready to head north! We've had a sudden opportunity come up that we are excited to explore in the coming episode. It's hard to leave the beautiful scenery of the eastern kootenays, but you'll soon see why we were eager to hit the road on short notice. You can find our previous morel series in the playlist tab of our channel, all documented day by day in chronological order. Morel mushrooms are the fruiting bodies of the mycelium in the ground. With good harvesting techniques, the mycelium is not harmed by collecting the mushrooms, and in some cases can actually help spread spore to a further reaching area where there is not already active morel mycelium. Both cutting and pulling is generally fine and will not cause harm, but we recommend making sure to cut any debris off of the morels before putting them into a carrying container to ensure they remain as clean as possible. Most of the morels we harvest are fire associated, meaning they grow in abundance the year following a wildfire. We break down these morels into a few different categories. "conicas" which are usually a mix of M. sextelata and M. eximia, followed by greens/greenies aka M. exuberans and finally greys/blondes or M. tomentosa. We also sometimes see M. importuna, the landscape morel, in areas with heavily disturbed soil usually caused by the fighting of the fire. From time to time we also see a handful of other naturally occurring morel species, usually growing where the burn meets the green forest. All species are what are known as "true morels" and are choice edibles, but they must be cooked before consuming.
