Notes By Sir.Hadi: 🧪 Plastids ➡️ Definition Plastids are double-membrane organelles found in the cells of plants and algae that are involved in the synthesis and storage of food. ➡️ Structure Outer membrane – Smooth and protective. Inner membrane – Controls the movement of molecules. Stroma – Fluid-filled space containing enzymes, ribosomes, and DNA. ➡️ Types of Plastids Chloroplast Contains the green pigment chlorophyll. Site of photosynthesis (conversion of light energy into chemical energy). Structure: Thylakoid: Flattened sacs where light-dependent reactions occur. Granum: Stack of thylakoids. Stroma: Fluid where the Calvin cycle takes place. Function: Photosynthesis – produces glucose and oxygen. Stores starch. Chromoplast Contains pigments like carotenoids (yellow, orange, red). Responsible for the color of fruits, flowers, and leaves. Function: Attracts pollinators and seed dispersers. Provides color to fruits and flowers. Leucoplast Colorless plastids. Located in non-photosynthetic tissues (e.g., roots, tubers). Three types: Amyloplast – Stores starch. Elaioplast – Stores oils and fats. Proteinoplast – Stores proteins. Function: Stores nutrients (starch, oils, proteins). Helps in biosynthesis of fatty acids and amino acids. ✅ Functions of Plastids ✔️ Photosynthesis (chloroplasts). ✔️ Storage of starch, oils, and proteins (leucoplasts). ✔️ Providing color to plant parts (chromoplasts). ✔️ Synthesis of organic compounds. ✅ MCQs 1.
