Who Were the Sadducees? 1. Small in number but more politically powerful than the Pharisees. They were the religious elite who controlled the temple. 2. Did not accept the oral laws and traditions of the Pharisees as authoritative. 3. Considered only the five books of Moses (Genesis-Deuteronomy) to be the authoritative Word of God. 4. Denied both the resurrection of the dead and any future existence after death (Matthew 22:23). 5. Rejected the spiritual world and denied the existence of angels and demons (Acts 23:6-8). In Matthew 22:23-33 Jesus Reveals Three Things the Super Smart and Sophisticated Sadducees Did Not Know: 1. They did not know the Word of God. 2. They did not know the Power of God. 3. They did not know the Life of God. "He is not the God of the dead but of the living." --Jesus No Jesus, No Life. Know Jesus, Know Life. Window on the Word: 1. Levirate Marriage (Brother-in-law marries brother's childless widow): a. To provide for her needs. b. To reserve the brother's family line. 2. Will we know one another in heaven? a.
