Ogier bags fourth title with win 16 October 2016 Sebastien Ogier crowned World Rally Champion for fourth time after taking his fifth victory of the year on RallyRACC Catalunya - Rally de Espana Volkswagen's Sebastien Ogier sealed his fourth WRC Drivers' title with victory on RallyRACC Catalunya - Rally de Espana this weekend. It was Ogier's fifth victory of the season and means he now emulates Tommi Makinen and Juha Kankkunen, the only other men to have also won the WRC Drivers' title four times, although he still has some way to go to match nine-time winner Sebastien Loeb. “It is amazing. It's been a tough season but fantastic! Thank you so much to the team!” Ogier told the official WRC site. “We have had the perfect car all weekend and once again I had so much fun behind the steering wheel.” Ogier took the lead on Friday's opening loop, although heavy rain made the going extremely tricky. In the afternoon, however, Ogier then slipped back to second, with local star Dani Sordo making the most of his better road position to surge into the lead, ending the leg with a 17 second cushion. On day two, Ogier hunted down the Hyundai pilot, halving his advantage in the morning, before finally re-taking top spot with his fifth stage win in succession in the penultimate test. Heading into the final day, Ogier had a 5.8sec advantage, which he increased to 12.7secs after SS16 and SS17. Ogier was then second best in SS18, and despite what happened twelve months ago here, when he crashed out in the Power Stage and threw away the win, he pushed to the end and was second fastest in the final test. Meanwhile, Sordo had to settle for the runners-up spot, 15.6secs back and unable to realise his hope of becoming the first Spaniard to win at home since Carlos Sainz back in 1995. “Really disappointed but I need to offer Seb my congratulations. I did my best, and I want to thank my fans for their support. I did my maximum,” Sordo noted. Hyundai team-mates Thierry Neuville and Hayden Paddon came in third and fourth, almost a minute back, and split by 12.8secs. Neuville now moves up to second in the Drivers' Championship, equal on points with Andreas Mikkelsen, who failed to finish after crashing out on Saturday in SS12. “A good weekend for us. We can be happy,” Neuville said. M-Sport's Mads Ostberg completed the top-five, ahead of DMACK's Ott Tanak and the fourth Hyundai of Kevin Abbring. Behind, WRC2 front runners Jan Kopecky and Pontus Tidemand were eighth and ninth, after a dominant performance in their Skoda Fabia R5s. Craig Breen took the final point in tenth in his Abu Dhabi Total WRT Citroen DS 3 WRC, despite losing considerable time on Saturday morning with driveshaft problems. Of the rest, Lorenzo Bertelli, Khalid Al-Qassimi, Pierre-Louis Loubet and Jari-Matti Latvala filled positions 11 through to 14. Latvala, who won the Power Stage, finished under Rally 2, retiring on Friday in SS5 after skidding wide and damaging the suspension on his Polo R WRC. He had been running third. M-Sport #2 Eric Camilli also finished under Rally 2, but in 19th, with transmission problems stopping him in SS12 on Saturday. Kris Meeke and Martin Prokop both retired on the final day joining Mikkelsen on the sidelines. Meeke, who had a rather scrappy event, was forced out in SS16 with engine problems. He had been fifth, despite a roll in SS2 on Friday. Prokop retired after ripping off his front-right wheel in SS17. The World Rally Championship now heads to Wales next for Rally GB, the penultimate round of the season, running from October 27-30.
