Protest in Kiev after Russia seizes Ukrainian ships

(26 Nov 2018) About 50-100 people gathered outside the Russian Embassy in Kiev on Sunday night following naval tensions between Russia and Ukraine near Crimea. Protesters placed small paper boats on a pile of tyres and called the Russian behaviour "an act of agression". Earlier on Sunday, the Ukrainian navy said that Russia's coast guard opened fire on and seized three of its vessels and wounded two crew members in the Black Sea following a tense standoff off the coast of the Crimean Peninsula. Russia blamed Ukraine for provoking the incident, which sharply escalated tensions that have been growing between the two countries since Moscow annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014, and it has worked steadily to bolster its zone of control around the peninsula.
