TORCH JOURNEY With the theme to his signature movie, "Rocky," blaring in the background, actor Sylvester Stallone took the Olympic torch on Wednesday and carried it on the first leg of what was to be a winding journey through Los Angeles. A beaming Stallone, wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with the blue Athens Olympic logo, called it the proudest moment of his life and the "greatest honour" he has ever had. When the Olympic fanfare began to play, Stallone trotted off on a brief lap to the ocean, then headed toward Santa Monica, pumping both arms in the air as more than 1,000 people cheered him on. The torch flew arrived Wednesday morning from Mexico and now begins the US leg of its journey towards the summer Olympic Games in Athens. Others scheduled to carry the torch include actor Tom Cruise, heavyweight boxing champion Vitali Klitschko, quadruple Olympic gold medal-winning swimmer Janet Evans, and Olympic decathlon champion Rafer Johnson. Los Angeles hosted the summer Olympic Games in 1932 and 1984. The flame is to visit other former Olympic cities in North America including St. Louis on Thursday, Atlanta on Friday, New York on Saturday, and Montreal on Sunday. The flame's 46,800-mile journey began June 4 and is due to end in Athens at the Opening Ceremony on August 13.
