Go inside the Pokemon Center next to Mount Moon. Speak to the man here and he will sell you a level 5 Magikarp for 500 Poke Dollars. You can also save your game right before talking to him. Then you can re-roll for a better nature or try for the tedious but very rewarding shiny Magikarp chance if you are patient enough. Might take you many tries by soft resetting the game but can be worth it if you are a shiny hunter. It took Youtuber Kymeri 9654 tries before getting one, so your mileage may vary. Next, you need to get Magikarp to level 20 for the evolution to Gyarados. You can train it by switching it out every battle, but it is easier to just bring it to the Day Care center below Cerulean City and continue your journey. Each step you take gives the pokemon 1 experience. If you want Gyarados right away, run or bike in the underground tunnel like a maniac for close to 7874 steps, pay the Day Care Man about 1500 Poke Dollars and evolve it after 1 level. This will take about an hour or so on your Switch 2 and about 10 minutes on Emulators. You now have the mighty Gyarados for the rest of your game!
