Learn how to turn Silent Mode ON or OFF without the side button on your iPhone 13, iPhone 14, and other older iPhone models. These tricks work on iPhone 13, 13 Mini, 13 Pro Max, iPhone 14 series, iPhone 12, iPhone 11, and even older models running iOS 26 or later. In this quick guide, I’ll show you two easy ways to mute or unmute your iPhone if the physical Silent/Ring switch is broken or not working. 00:00 intro 00:13 Using AssistiveTouch 01:22 Using Back Tap Here are two easy ways to turn Silent Mode on or off without using the side switch on iPhones that don’t have the Action Button, like the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, and older iPhone models. Apple still hasn’t added a Silent Mode shortcut in Control Center or in the Settings app. But we can still do it with two features on your iPhone: AssistiveTouch and Back Tap. First, let’s set it up using the AssistiveTouch button. Open the Settings app on your iPhone. Scroll down and tap Accessibility. Scroll again and tap Touch. Now tap AssistiveTouch and turn it on. Under Custom Actions, you’ll see options like Single Tap, Double Tap, and Long Press. We’re going to assign the Mute action here. I suggest avoiding Single Tap so you don’t accidentally turn Silent Mode on and miss important calls or notifications. Go to Double Tap and select Mute. On my iPhone, double-tapping the AssistiveTouch button switches between Silent Mode and Ring Mode instantly. You can also use Long Press. Tap Long Press, choose Mute, and adjust the press duration. I keep mine at the minimum, about 0.25 seconds. It makes toggling Silent Mode quick and smooth. The second method is Back Tap. Go back to the Settings app. Scroll down to Accessibility. Scroll again and tap Touch. Now scroll to the bottom and tap Back Tap. You can pick either Double Tap or Triple Tap. I recommend Triple Tap to avoid triggering it by mistake. Tap Triple Tap and select Mute from the list. From now on, triple-tap the back of your iPhone to turn on Silent Mode. Triple-tap again to turn it off. This method works for all iPhone models that support Back Tap. If you have an iPhone with the new Action Button, check out my separate tutorial linked in the description and pinned comment.
