The song was created as an attempt to replicate the composition of Savage Garden's previous single "Truly Madly Deeply". Upon its release, "I Knew I Loved You" topped the US Billboard Hot 100 chart for four weeks in early 2000 and topped the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart for 17 weeks, becoming that listing's most successful track of the 2000s decade.
