The F/M ratio (food-to-microorganism ratio) is one of the most important process control numbers in activated sludge, but calculating it is only half the job. In this video I walk my OIT through how to calculate F/M ratio step by step, then break down what the number actually tells you about your plant and what to do when it drifts. The F/M ratio formula is straightforward once you know which numbers to pull. We cover the lbs BOD/day and lbs MLVSS/day calculations, why you use MLVSS instead of MLSS, how to convert TSS to VSS using percent volatile, and how to read your F/M number for activated sludge process control decisions. We also get into why the number alone isn’t enough. A low F/M can mean a mature, diverse biological population that’s versatile and handles load swings well, but only if that low F/M is coming from a high sludge age. If it’s coming from a lack of food, you’re looking at a starving system, not a robust one. Same number, two very different plants.
