Robert Scheideman, 1921 - 2014

A tribute slideshow to Robert L. Scheideman of Portland, Ore., May 20, 1921 - July 15, 2014. Robert L. Scheideman was born in Portland, Ore. to Henry and Marie Scheideman on May 20, 1921, the older of two children. After graduating from Portland’s Jefferson High School, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and was sent to Heppner, Ore. to build fences and roads, and assist with other conservation efforts. In 1942, he joined the U.S. Merchant Marines and sailed for four years in the Pacific Ocean Theatre during WWII. During his tour of service, he became friends with Richard Lowrey. While visiting Richard’s home in Longview, Wash. in between voyages, Robert met Richard’s little sister and his future wife, Shirley Lowrey. A romance blossomed through letters and he eventually popped the question over the phone when his last trip ended in New York City in 1946. The married couple settled in Portland, Ore. where Robert joined the Portland Police Department. After 30 years on the job, he enjoyed a brief retirement before accepting a position in private security for a prominent jewelry storeowner during his buying and selling trips around the world. He later volunteered for AARP helping people with handicaps manage their finances, and he also volunteered for his HOA creating the Highland Neighborhood’s first Neighborhood Watch Program. He had a zeal for life and some of his many hobbies included golfing, traveling, ballroom dancing, jogging, cycling, reading and recycling, earning him the nickname of “Mr. Recycler.” Most importantly, he was a loving family man known for his generosity, kindness, strength and sense of humor. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Shirley; son, David Scheideman; daughter, Joan (husband Pete Malane); sister, Patricia Myers; four grandchildren, Dameion (wife Margaret) Scheideman, Karri (husband John Walgamot), Ryan (wife Stacy) Thompson, Jami (husband Mike Reagan); seven great-grand children, Zachary, Tyler, Dameion Jr., Amber, Emily, Lauren and Kyle; and one great-great grandson, TJ; nephew, Steven Myers; and nieces, Linda Seldomridge and Janet Macdonald.
