The remnants of Hurricane Ida dropped record-breaking rain on Wednesday across New York and surrounding states like New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Connecticut. "I woke up to a lot of people banging on my door and just a lot of noises, my house, basically coming from my basement and went downstairs and saw about six feet of water in my basement..." In New York City,... streets turned to rivers, cars were swept away, and subway lines had to be suspended overnight. Images posted on social media showed people wading through knee-deep water inside their buildings. Subway services slowly resumed on Thursday, but commuters spent hours trying to get to work. "It takes me like an hour and a half thereabouts on a good commute, a good connection. But today, now, look at the time. I was supposed to be at work 9:30, and I'm going to get there maybe at 11 o'clock." The storm brought six to eight inches of rain to the Northeast region from Philadelphia to Connecticut, setting an hourly record of more than 3 inches in Manhattan. The Mayor of New York City called it a "historic weather event" which prompted a flash flood emergency to be issued in the city,... for the first time. Officials say,... at least 45 people died Wednesday and Thursday. 25 in New Jersey, 15 in New York, five in Pennsylvania, one in Maryland and one in Connecticut. Ida, one of the most powerful storms ever to hit the U.S., had previously barreled into the southern state of Louisiana,... which has braced for a month without electricity.
