Catholic Daily Readings and Reflection | Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time | February 8, 2026 You are the light of the world. Not "you should try to become the light." Not "you might qualify someday if you work hard enough." Jesus looked at ordinary people on a Galilean hillside and told them what they already were. So why does your light feel so dim? Isaiah has an answer. The people in his day fasted and prayed and went through all the religious motions, but God was not impressed. Their worship changed nothing about how they treated people. So the prophet told them the truth: share your bread with the hungry, shelter the homeless, clothe the naked. Then your light will break forth like the dawn. The light does not come from religious performance. It comes from actually caring for people who need care. Paul understood this too. He could have dazzled Corinth with rhetoric. Instead he came in weakness and fear so their faith would rest on God's power, not his impressiveness. The lamp is not the point.
