How to Find the Fraction 1/3 on a Ruler or Tape Measure

In this quick video, I'll show you how to approximate 1/3 of an inch on a standard ruler or tape measure. It helps when we convert the fractions to decimals. Locate the 1/4 inch (0.25 inches) and 1/2 inch (0.5 inches) marks on your ruler. 1/3 of an inch (approximately 0.333 inches) falls between these two points. Locate the 3/8 inch mark (Convert to a decimal: 0.375 inches), which is halfway between 1/4 and 1/2 inches. Since 0.333 (1/3) is slightly less than 0.375 (3/8), 1/3 of an inch will be a little before the 3/8 inch mark. On your ruler, find the space between the 1/4 inch and 3/8 inch marks. Visually estimate a point slightly less than 3/8 inch but more than 1/4 inch. This is your approximation for 1/3 of an inch.
