Roger Ballen graduated in psychology from Berkeley, then the epicenter of counterculture during the Vietnam War. This time when the world went through an identity crisis led him to do his introspection. Photography became a tool to explore himself and the world and Roger Ballen went around the globe for a journey of a few months that will ultimately last 5 years. From this trip, which will take him for the first time to South Africa, he will release his first book, Boyhood. Photographie remains a parallel activity; his love of nature, solitude, strange places and his aversion to office work lead him to take a doctorate in geology. Geology brings Roger Ballen back to South Africa and Johannesburg, where some of the world's most important mineral resources are found. Installed since 1982 in a zone under the apartheid, torn between development and third world, Roger Ballen produces controversial photos, Twins, Cat Catcher, Brian with Pet Pig which will give the books Dorps, Platteland, Outland and will define his Ballenesque aesthetic.
