We are answering the question, what can we grow in October. Allotment gardening in the UK in 2021 is very seasonal. We are planning what we can grow in October and be harvesting through into spring. The benefit of allotment gardening in the UK is the space that allows us to plant crops in rotation through the winter and spring. When we are thinking about what to grow in October we are planning for the coldest and wettest months of the UK year. 2021 has been a colder year so far but the winter could be mild so by knowing what to sow in October we can plan for some good growing days. Today we are showing how to plant winter onions from onion sets. We are trying to improve our self sufficiency skills by planting throughout the year. Self sufficiency is easy in the warmer months but filling the hunger gap requires extra effort and planning through the colder months. We have far less choice of what to grow and have to supplement our diet with shop bought products too. By trialling different crops each year we are finding what to plant in colder months and seeing what we can be planting in October and the rest of the autumn.
