From Curious Kid to KRBC Anchor: David Bacon’s Broadcast Journey

Our latest guest on the Abilene People podcast is longtime local broadcaster David Bacon. A native of Abilene, David co-anchors the KRBC News at 6 and 10 alongside Abby Green. But his connection to the station goes way back—he fondly recalls sneaking into the KRBC studios as a curious little boy. Few could have guessed that one day, he’d be sitting behind the anchor desk himself. David is a graduate of Cooper High School and holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Southern Methodist University. His broadcast career has taken him to stations in Midland/Odessa, San Antonio, and St. Louis. But it was back home in Abilene where David made his longest mark, serving as KTAB’s Sports Director for over 23 years. He covered everything from local high school championships to Super Bowls before stepping away from television to focus on family life. Eventually, though, the call of journalism brought him back—this time as a co-anchor and producer at KRBC. Off the clock, David is a die-hard SMU, Texas Rangers, and Dallas Cowboys fan, and he loves spending time on the golf course. He’s also the voice behind McMurry University’s football and basketball broadcasts. In our conversation, David opens up about the emotional difficulty of reporting heartbreaking stories—especially those involving children—and shares his candid thoughts on how local TV news has evolved. He offers insight into what’s changed, what’s stayed the same, and where he hopes the industry is headed.
