U.S. President Biden and Chinese President Xi hold virtual summit

오늘 미중 첫 정상회담...타이완 문제 등 논의 We start with the virtual summit between U.S. President Biden and President Xi Jinping of China, which is now underway. President Biden says the two countries have to play by same rules of the road while President Xi says they should pursue win-win cooperation. The meeting is to last several hours and is expected to be about setting terms for future competition and defusing tensions over Taiwan and other flashpoints. We have our Eum Ji-young on the line for us. Give us the details. Mokyeon, the meeting began at 7:45 PM on Monday, Washington time and albeit virtual,... it is the two presidents’ first face-to-face summit since President Biden took office 10 months ago. And this video dialogue,... initiated by Biden, is to last several hours. Shortly after the meeting began, Biden said that he looked forward to a candid and forthright discussion, saying that they have responsibilities as leaders of the U.S. and China. "As I said before it seems to me that it's our responsibility as leaders of China and United States to ensure that the competition by two countries does not veer into conflict whether attended or unattended. Just simple, straight forward competition." He added that they have established some common sense guardrails and the two leaders should be clear and honest on where they disagree. He also mentioned interests that intersect, particularly on global issues such as climate change. He also said that they'll be talking about areas where they have concerns including human rights and the Indo-Pacific region. President Xi replied that China and the U.S. should cooperate to advance the noble cause of peace. Xi added that both countries are at critical stages of development and the humanity of the 'global village' is facing many challenges. Xi also noted that both sides should coexist in peace, respect each other, and pursue a win-win relationship. There are no concrete details provided about the topics on the agenda yet,... but people familiar with the preparation for the meeting said that Taiwan is expected to be the top priority,... which has been the major source of tension between the two countries. In recent months, military tensions have been scaling up between Washington and Beijing over Taiwan,... which the Biden administration has been trying to carve out more space as an independent island while China claims it as its own under its 'One China' policy. Also, as the virtual meeting comes after the recent pledges by the U.S. and China at the UN climate talks in Glasgow,... increasing their cooperation to combat climate change could be discussed as well. U.S.-China trade and tariff wars, supply chain issues and North Korea and Iran could also be on the agenda. But the meeting is not expected to produce specific outcomes according to officials. Right Mokyeon. A U.S. senior official who asked not to be named told reporters... that "it's not a meeting where Washington expects deliverables." The official also suggested that Biden will be "very direct" on raising concerns about China's behavior in his summit with Xi. Also, the U.S. official said "it's important to keep channels of communication open," and previewed the discussion to manage the competition between the two countries. This is all for now but we'll bring more updates in our later newscast.
