The Workload We Take Home | The Hidden Cost of Working in Probation

Work doesn't end when probation staff leave the office. For thousands of probation professionals across England and Wales, excessive workloads are following them home—into their evenings, weekends, relationships, sleep and health. This film shares the reality behind the statistics. Based on Napo member surveys, it highlights the scale of unpaid overtime, the growing burden of accrued TOIL, and the impact that excessive workloads are having on the people responsible for protecting the public. Behind every impossible caseload is a person. Behind every statistic is a family. And behind every late night is someone trying to hold a system together. Because work shouldn't follow you home. Survey highlights • 95% of members said workloads and pay are impacting their mental health. • More than 500 members responded to Napo's TOIL and Overtime Survey. • Survey respondents are estimated to be carrying more than 16,800 hours of accrued TOIL—the equivalent of approximately 454 working weeks of time owed back. • More than 350 members shared personal accounts of the impact excessive workloads are having on their lives.
