In what can be described as a crossroads fight, former three-time light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev returns to the ring in the main event against fast-rising knockout artist Bektemir Melikuziev on Saturday, January 30, at an unknown venue in Russia at a catchweight of 178 pounds. The fight will be streamed live on DAZN and seen in more than 200 countries, including the U.S., Russia, and Uzbekistan. Information regarding the arena will be announced shortly. Kovalev, 37, (34-4-1, 29 KOs) fights for the first time since losing the WBO light heavyweight title via 11th-round knockout to Canelo Alvarez in November 2019. The 37-year-old had been set to return in a 180-pound catchweight bout with Sullivan Barrera on April 25 but the event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. "The Krusher" is excited to get back at it as he embarks on a path to secure a crack to become champion once again. "I am glad that after a long break, I am starting my journey back to the title of world champion," Kovalev said in a press release. "The fact that this fight is scheduled to be in Russia gives me even more motivation and strength. I want to please my fellow countrymen again with my boxing and a beautiful victory." Melikuziev (6-0, 5 KOs) had a highly decorated amateur career. The devastating puncher from Uzbekistan captured the silver medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics, a silver medal at the 2015 AIBA World Boxing Championships, and won gold medals at the 2015 and 2017 Asian Championships. The 24-year-old is coming off a third-round knockout of Alan Campa on October 30. He's excited to be getting the opportunity to square off with one of the premier names in the 175-pound division.
