King Hrólf Kraki is a Berserker that appears as an optional boss in God of War Ragnarök. Out of all the berserkers that can be encountered, Hrólf Kraki, like Sigrún of the Valkyries, is the strongest and most powerful out of all of them. He can be found in Midgard. Hrólfr Kraki was a semi-legendary Danish King who appears in both Anglo-Saxon and Norse tradition. According to both traditions, Hrólfr was described as a scylding, a member of a legendary Danish royal family. He is the nephew of King Hroðgar and the grandson of King Healfdene. In Hrólfs saga kraka, Hrólfr is the son of Helgi and Yrsa, the daughter of Queen Oluf. When he succeeded his father after he was killed in battle at the hands of Swedish King Aðils, Hrólfr Kraki assembled a group of twelve berserkers in order to exact his revenge on the king. Hrólf Kraki was once a lowly warrior in the Midgardian kingdom of Lejre. He was vouched for by the royal advisor, Mimir, which put him in the court of King Aldis. Hrólf and his twelve Berserkers immediately killed and deposed Aldis, allowing Hrólf to usurp power and become King of Lejre, causing Mimir to shamefully regret his actions and perhaps even instilling into him a repressed thirst for vengeance, which was something that, as Kratos noted, not even Odin managed to bring out of his former adviser. Hrólf and his Berserkers eventually died, but their souls continue to linger in his sword, Skofnung. God of War Ragnarök Years later, Mimir and his companion Kratos found the Hilt of Skofnung, finally giving Mimir the chance to avenge Aldis and undo his mistake. After slaying all the Berserkers, Kratos confronted and slayed King Hrólf himself, bringing Mimir peace. "Former owner of the cursed blade Skofnung. An unworthy man who declared himself king. Mimir spoke bitterly of how he and his Berserkers laid waste to the Kingdom of Lejre. It is unlike Mimir to seek vengeance, but his cause is just. I have taken Hrólf's sword, once a symbol of betrayal, and used it to rid these realms of him and his followers. I hope this brings Mimir some peace." "Skofnung is mine! You can't have it!" According to Hrólf Krakis saga, King Hrólf is a member of the house of Scylding's which is a lineage of royalty derived from the first Danish king Skjöldr. In this game however, Skjöldr is portrayed as being in his teens/early adult life whereas Hrólf Kraki had already died before becoming a malevolent spirit, creating an inconsistency as to if this King Hrólf is the same as depicted in Norse literature. Unlike his portrayal in-game, King Hrólf is depicted as a charitable and noble ruler as opposed to his rival King Aðils (King Aldis). It seems that Hrólfs traits of nobility have been swapped with Aldis’ wickedness to the portrayal we see in-game.
