Shoah, Merkel: Insults to Jews or pro-Israelis are shameful.

Rome, January 27 (askanews) - During a solemn event celebrating the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, German Chancellor Angela Merkel called it a "shame" that Jews in Germany are victims of insults, threats, or violence. "It is a shame that people in Germany are insulted, threatened, or attacked when they make it clear they are Jewish or when they support the State of Israel," the German leader declared. The emotional commemoration in Berlin was attended by survivors of the former Nazi extermination camp in southern Poland. "Crimes against humanity can never be forgotten. We have a continuing responsibility to pass on knowledge of the atrocities committed in the past and to keep their memory alive," the Chancellor emphasized, saying that the fact that the police have to monitor synagogues and Jewish centers is a "disgrace" for the country. More than 100,000 Jews have made Germany their home, but it's not without reason that some of them fear being insulted or attacked. (AFP images)
