China sends clear message of denuclearization to N.K. top official

중국, 방중 리수용에 명확한 비핵화 전달 China has reportedly told its long-time ally North Korea that it wants a nuclear-free Korean peninsula. This is according to South Korea's top nuclear envoy who met with his Chinese counterpart in Beijing on Wednesday. The revelation comes a matter of days after the International Atomic Energy Agency warned that North Korea appears to have restarted its main nuclear plant. Park Jong-hong reports. China has made it clear to North Korea that it looks forward to a Korea free from nuclear weapons. South Korea's nuclear envoy to the six party talks Kim Hong-kyun said his Chinese counterpart Wu Dawei relayed that message to North Korea's vice chairman of the Workers' Party Ri Su-yong when he made an unexpected visit to China last week. Wu also told Kim that China is committed to fully enforcing UN sanctions against North Korea's nuclear and missile programs and both sides agreed to continue to work closely to that end. He also voiced China's strong opposition to North Korea's provocations, including future nuclear and missile tests. Chinese media had earlier reported that President Xi Jinping had told Ri that Beijing is clear and consistent on the issue of the Korean peninsula but did not confirm whether denuclearization was brought up. In the past week, the North Korean delegation's visit had raised speculation China and North Korea were setting aside the nuclear issue in an effort to mend their strained political ties.
